BEJMAT, as part of the iconic Moorish art of Zellige, is considered an art form in its own right with significant influence on Western decoration, the process of which has remained unchanged for a millennium.

Dating from the 10th century, it was typically rectangular in shape and used as a paving stone. Initially in white and terracotta, from the 14th century onwards it was enriched with a vibrant palette of colours.
